Frameless Motor

Frameless Motor

What is a Frameless Motor?

As the name suggests, a Frameless motor consists of a rotor (the moving part) and a stator (the stationary part) unit without a frame or enclosure, instead the components are directly integrated into the system/machine assembly such as in defense, military & special utility vehicles, in navigation equipment in aerospace industry, automotive sector, etc. This integration makes the frameless motor a great choice for applications where size and weight is a concern.

Frameless Design of the Motor

Frameless Motors are designed with two primary components: the rotor and the stator. The rotor consists of high quality Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets and serves as the rotating element within the motor. The stator, on the other hand, comprises copper windings that surrounds the rotor and remains stationary. The rotor is usually mounted on bearings or supports to hold it in place and allow it to rotate freely. With this configuration torque is applied against the load through the interaction of a rotating magnetic field from the rotor and the stator. This whole arrangement is integrated directly within the system they power. They might be mounted within the machinery housing or structure, eliminating the need for a separate motor casing making it a compact and light solution for various applications.

Design of a frameless motor usually depends upon the application requirements and performance characteristics. Frameless motors are easy to customize and adapt to fit your specific mechanical requirements

Advantages of Frameless Motors

    • Compact Design: These motors can be integrated into the frame/housing of the system itself, making them a compact and versatile choice where there are space constraints.
    • Reduced Weight: The frameless design makes the motor lightweight and reduces the size of the overall system.
    • Enhanced Heat Dissipation: Having no frame or enclosure results in improved airflow over the motor windings, making it easier to dissipate the heat.
    • High power-to-weight ratio: Frameless motors also have a high power-to-weight ratio, which means they can generate a lot of power for their size and weight.
    • High Customizability: These motors can be customized as per the specific applications & spaces.
