Brake Motor

What is a Brake Motor?

A brake motor is a combination of the motor attached with an electromagnetic brake. The braking system is designed to stop or hold the motion of the motor for the applications where rapid deceleration or fast stopping is needed. Usually there are two types of braking system that can be integrated with a motor, first is where the brakes are applied when power is switched on, the second is where brakes are applied when power is switched off.

The choice of brake usually differs from application to application but generally the first type of electromagnetic brakes are preferred due to high safety factors.

Types of Braking System

Just like a traditional BLDC Motor the brake motor also has a rotor and a stator assembled in an enclosure equipped with bearings, protecting it and providing smooth motion of the rotor. What makes it unique for a particular application is the set of electromagnetic brakes integrated in the motor. The engagement and disengagement of the brakes depends whether the current is cut or supplied respectively. When the motor is running the electromagnet disengages the friction pad and the rotor spins freely. As soon as the power supply is cut the electromagnet gets discharged releasing the friction pad to push against the stationary surface stopping the rotor at a rapid pace. This construction is reliable for applications where no unintended movements is a crucial factor & we need precise control over the stopping process.
